Democrats in St. Augusta, MN

St. Augusta is a city of about 3,600 residents in Stearns County, directly south of St. Cloud along the Mississippi River corridor. Its motto of "Where Country Meets Community" reflects the city's character: largely rural in landscape, with the conveniences and connections of the greater St. Cloud metro nearby. St. Augusta sits entirely within Senate District 14, making the SD14 DFL the local Democratic-Farmer-Labor organization for St. Augusta residents.

St. Augusta at a Glance

St. Augusta has been a community since the 1850s, but became a city relatively recently. The area was founded as Saint Augusta Township, settled by German Catholic immigrants who built St. Mary Help of Christians Church in 1873, a Gothic Revival stone structure that still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. For nearly 150 years the township got along fine without incorporating.

That changed in 2000. Facing the prospect of annexation by St. Cloud, the township voted to incorporate as a city on May 2, 2000, and named itself Ventura, in honor of then-Governor Jesse Ventura. The name didn't last long. Voters chose from three options on the November ballot: St. Augusta, Ventura, or Augsburg. Seventy-percent of voters favored St. Augusta, and the township that had existed for nearly 150 years had become a city.

Today St. Augusta is one of the more prosperous communities in SD14. The median household income is $140,227 (nearly double the St. Cloud metro average) and the city has grown steadily, driven largely by families seeking larger lots and a quieter pace of life within commuting distance of St. Cloud and the Twin Cities. 

Hidden Lake Park

St. Augusta's Hidden Lake Park is the city's primary community gathering space. The park features walking trails around the lake, a disc golf course, a sand volleyball court, a playground, a pavilion available for rent, and a pier. It's a year-round destination; in winter, the St. Augusta Blizzard Busters snowmobile club maintains 26 miles of groomed trails connecting St. Augusta to Clearwater and St. Joseph.

A family-oriented community

St. Augusta skews young, with a median age of 36. Children under 15 make up more than 20% of the population. Most students attend schools in the St. Cloud Area School District, including Clearview Elementary in nearby Clear Lake and Tech High School in St. Cloud.

Aric Putnam (DFL) is the incumbent state senator representing Senate District 14, which includes all of St. Augusta. The Senate district covers St. Augusta along with St. Cloud, Waite Park, St. Joseph, Sauk Rapids, and portions of Benton, Sherburne, and Stearns counties. Senator Putnam is on the August 11, 2026 primary ballot and, if he advances, will face a Republican challenger in the November 3 general election.

State House — District 14A

House District 14A covers southwest St. Cloud, Waite Park, St. Augusta, and portions of St. Joseph. This seat is open in 2026. The SD14 DFL convention endorsed Abdi Daisane for the 14A seat. The primary is August 11.
