Sauk Rapids is a city of about 13,800 residents in Benton County, located immediately northeast of St. Cloud on the east bank of the Mississippi River. It's the largest city in Benton County and one of the fastest-growing communities in the St. Cloud metro area.

Sauk Rapids at a Glance

Sauk Rapids sits where the Sauk River meets the Mississippi, a confluence that shaped the city's earliest history. The rapids that gave the city its name drew settlers in the 1850s for their water power, and the city has grown steadily ever since, tripling in population between 1960 and 2010.

Today Sauk Rapids is a family-oriented community with a median age of 35 and a median household income of $71,841. The city is home to over 20 parks, a strong riverfront trail system, and two signature community events: Rapids River Days each summer and the Benton County Fair.

The Mississippi Riverfront

The river is the heart of Sauk Rapids' public life. Four river parks are connected by the Oxcart Trail, a paved path along the Mississippi. Municipal Park sits directly on the river and offers a boat landing, athletic courts, shelters available for rent, and views of the Mississippi from observation swings along the bank. The Clearing at Lions/Southside Park hosts a free weekly summer music series, Rock the Riverside.

The Sauk Rapids Regional Bridge, completed in 2007, is a distinctive local landmark — on the Sauk Rapids side, a 35-foot spiral helix ramp connects the bridge deck directly to the riverfront trail system below.

Benton County Historical Society

The Benton County Historical Society is based in Sauk Rapids and preserves and interprets the history of the county, including its role as one of the earliest settled areas in central Minnesota. The museum includes research collections and rotating exhibits on local history.
